Potter (true name, Helen Heelis) was a pioneer of character merchandising, particularly having to do with animals. "The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin" was published in 1903, a year after Peter Rabbit. .
In this darling illustration from "The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin", several squirrels are headed back again to Owl Island to deliver gifts to Old Brown the Owl, after gathering nuts there the day before.
